Snyder never watched the 2017 League. Deborah didn't let him

There’s a version of Justice League that Zack Snyder has never seen, and it’s the one with his name in the credits.

The story appeared on Happy Sad Confused, journalist Josh Horowitz’s podcast, in an interview recorded at the Toronto Film Festival and published on September 17, 2026. Josh wanted to know if there was a definitive moment when he realized that his time in that universe had ended. An email, a call, something.

It existed. But it didn’t come from any Warner office.

A little context for those who have just arrived. In May 2017, in the middle of post-production, Snyder stepped away from Justice League after a family tragedy. The studio called Joss Whedon, who rewrote and reshot much of the film. The result debuted in November of that year. The person who watched it first, inside the house, was Deborah Snyder, producer of the film and wife of the director. And she came back with a message that he repeats to this day.

He says that he understood everything there: that was the end, and that would be the legacy. And he obeyed. What he knows about the 2017 version arrived via meme, including a detail from the opening that fans have been commenting on for years. Right when his name appears as director, you can see a homeless man holding a sign that, from what he remembers, says something like “I tried”. He himself warns that he never went to check it out.

And then comes the phrase that explains why the movement mattered so much. Snyder says that, if he hadn’t made his Justice League, that sign would have been the end of the whole story. The last record of his years of work would be an unintentional joke in the credits of a film he didn’t recognize.

It wasn’t the end point. The November 2017 petition became a campaign, the campaign became four hours of film in 2021, and today he points to this film as the best of his career. The 2017 cut is still there, without him having seen it. It will hardly be missed.
